چکیده

Biofilm infections; by definition, are the communities of microorganisms which are attached to a surface and are not readily sampled by common diagnostic techniques. Biofilms are innately more resistant than their individual planktonic counterparts and microorganisms frequently exhibit increased antimicrobial resistance. Our expanding knowledge of biofilm-related infections has broadened our view of possible infectious agents and created a strong demand for new diagnostic attitudes and techniques that overcome the main limitation for detection of infections due to biofilms.

Atypical Isolated Infections of the Infratemporal Fossa: A Diagnostic Challenge

Introduction: Atypical infratemporal fossa infections are rare and potentially fatal.   Case Report: A case of an aspergillosis localized in the infratemporal fossa and another case of tuberculosis of the infratemporal fossa originating from the maxillary sinus, is described. The first patient was immunocompromised and showed symptoms of facial numbness; whereas the other was an immunocompetent...

Bacterial biofilms: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Bacteria have traditionally been regarded as individual organisms growing in homogeneous planktonic populations. However, bacteria in natural environments usually form communities of surface-adherent organisms embedded in an extracellular matrix, called biofilms. Current antimicrobial strategies often fail to control bacteria in the biofilm mode of growth. Treatment failure is particularly freq...

Biofilms in dermatology.

Biofilms are diverse communities of microorganisms embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substance which are firmly attached to biotic or abiotic surfaces. Approximately 80% of all human infections are associated with biofilms and evidence for their role in an ever-growing number of cutaneous disorders is constantly unfolding. Biofilms present a difficult challenge t...

Persistent bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection in cattle herds

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a significant pathogen associated with gastrointestinal, respiratory, and reproductive diseases of cattle worldwide. It causes continuous economic losses to the cattle industry primarily due to decreased reproductive performance. The ability of virus to cross the placenta during early pregnancy can result in the birth of persistently infected (PI) calves. P...

Discovery Medicine

Discovery Medicine, Volume 12, Number 67, Pages 461-470, december 2011 Abstract: Control of Gram-negative bacterial infections of plants and animals remains a major challenge because conventional approaches are often not sufficient to eradicate these infections. One major reason for their persistence seems to be the capability of the bacteria to grow within biofilms that protect them from adver...
